General FAQs About Mariposa Veterinary Wellness Center
What types of animals does Mariposa Veterinary Wellness Center treat?
We care for dogs and cats as well as birds, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats and other rodents, reptiles, amphibians, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, pot-bellied pigs, goats and many other exotic pets. The only animals we do not treat are fish, venomous snakes and lizards, and primates.
What is integrative veterinary medicine?
Integrative veterinary medicine combines conventional medicine such as diagnostics, surgery, dentistry and prescription medications with complementary therapies like acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, laser therapy and veterinary medical manipulation. The goal is to treat the whole animal and use every appropriate option to help your pet heal and stay well.
Is Mariposa Veterinary Wellness Center AAHA-accredited?
Yes. Our hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association and is proud to be the only AAHA-accredited practice in Lenexa, KS. Accreditation means we are evaluated against rigorous standards for medical care, anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, diagnostics, pharmacy and facility safety.
Are you a Fear Free and Cat Friendly practice?
Yes. Our team members receive Fear Free training and we are a Gold-level Cat Friendly Practice. We use gentle, low-stress handling, take our time with nervous patients and focus on cooperation rather than control.
Are you accepting new clients?
Availability for first-time appointments is limited because we prioritize timely care for established patients and specialty services. Please call our office to discuss current availability and whether our services are the right fit for your pet.
How do I schedule an appointment?
You can request an appointment online or call our office at (913) 825-3330. Wellness appointments may book several weeks out, so we recommend scheduling routine visits as early as possible.
What are your office hours?
We are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. We are closed on Sundays.
Do you offer emergency care?
We may not have availability for emergencies. If your pet needs urgent care outside our schedule, please contact a 24-hour emergency hospital in the Kansas City area such as BluePearl Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center or VCA Mission.
What should I bring to my pet’s first visit?
Please complete the Pre-Visit Questionnaire and any new client forms before your appointment and bring previous medical and vaccine records, a list of current medications and supplements, and information about your pet’s diet. Bird and reptile owners should also complete the species history form.
Do you offer acupuncture for pets?
Yes. Our veterinarians offer acupuncture and aquapuncture to help manage pain, arthritis, musculoskeletal problems, gastrointestinal and urinary disorders, skin issues and more. Many pets find treatments relaxing.
Do you provide chiropractic care for animals?
Yes. Dr. Anthony Carrier is certified in Veterinary Medical Manipulation, which is essentially chiropractic care performed by a veterinarian. It is used for joint stiffness, back and neck pain, hind end weakness, post-operative recovery and senior comfort.
Do you customize vaccine protocols?
Yes. We design vaccination plans based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, health history, prior vaccine reactions and legal requirements. All of our vaccines are thimerosal-free, and we offer vaccine titer testing when appropriate.
Do you perform dental cleanings?
Yes. We perform professional dental cleanings with ultrasonic scaling above and below the gum line, comprehensive dental charting, digital dental radiographs and extractions when needed. Every patient is intubated and monitored under anesthesia.
Do you vaccinate rabbits for RHDV2?
Yes. We recommend that all pet rabbits receive the RHDV2 vaccine, an initial two-dose series given 21 days apart followed by annual boosters, because the disease is highly contagious and frequently fatal.
What aftercare options do you offer when a pet passes away?
In addition to traditional options, we offer aquamation, a gentle, water-based alternative to cremation, through our partnership with Heartland Pet Aquamation. You still receive your pet’s remains, and the process uses far less energy than flame cremation.
Do you declaw cats?
As an AAHA-accredited hospital, we follow the American Animal Hospital Association position on declawing. We are happy to help you with alternatives such as scratching posts, positive reinforcement training, regular nail trims and nail caps.
Can I order my pet’s medications and supplements online?
Yes. You can order prescriptions through our online pharmacy and Standard Process whole food supplements through Patient Direct, which ships directly to your home. Current clients can also submit a product refill request online.
